Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has proven its suitability for the disintegration of kidney stones over the course of many years of use. In the meantime, ESWT has been extended to a variety of additional applications in orthopedics, traumatology, rheumatology, and veterinary medicine. In fact, ESWT has led to astonishing results in the treatment of pain in the region of tissue located close to bones and in the therapy of tendinopathies, desmopathies, fractures, and degenerative joint disease.
ESWT is an efficient noninvasive treatment to treat common musculoskeletal & orthopedic disorders in Equine patients.

Conditions that may benefit from ESWT include, but are not limit to:
- Insertional desmopathies (Suspensory & Collateral injuries)
- Tendonopathies (with and without calcification)
- Stress fractures
- Metacarpal disease
- Sesamoiditis & Sesamoid fractures
- Splint & pedal bone fractures
- Navicular disease
- Bone exotosis
- Degenerative joint disease (e.g. ring bone, spavin)
- Sore back problems

Below is a horse receiving ESWT treatment.

Treatments last roughly 10 to 20 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis. A therapy unit generates focused shockwaves of low and high energy. The shockwave intensity level is selected as tolerated and needed. Treatment is usually performed in sessions of up to three times with an interval of 1 to 3 weeks. After completion of the course of treatments, an additional healing period may be required. A boost treatment may be required after several months for certain indications.
