Dr. Mark Akin, DVM
Dr. Akin is a 1986 graduate of Mississippi State University. After
practicing on the thoroughbred racing circuit in Maryland for several
years, Dr. Akin established Akin Equine Veterinary Services in January
of 1991. Dr. Akin's special areas of interest are lameness, internal
medicine, and reproduction. Dr Akin is married. He and his wife,
Camille, have two children. Sarah and Tucker. Along with practicing,
Dr. Akin is involved with the AAEP
where he has served on serveral committees, the AVMA,
MVMA, and TVMA. He was also the 1995 Mississippi State University
Alumni Fellow from the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Charles P. Mercer, DVM
Dr. Mercer graduated from Mississippi State University College of
Veterinary Medicine in May of 1996. Dr. Mercer joined Akin Equine
Veterinary Services in the winter of 1996. In April of 2000, he
moved to Hattiesburg, MS to work in a large animal practice and
to be closer to his hometown of Richton, MS. Dr. Mercer returned
to Akin Equine Veterinary Services in October of 2001. He received
the Young Veterinarian of the Year Award from the Mississippi Veterinary
Medical Association in 2002. Dr. Mercer is a member of the American
Association of Equine Practitioners, Mississippi Veterinary Medical
Association, and American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Mercer
enjoys working on equine internal medicine, reproductions, and lameness.
When not working on horses, he is an avid sports fan and enjoys
hunting and fishing.
Dr. Ashley M. Phelps, D.V.M.
Dr. Phelps graduated from Mississippi State University College
of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2004. She came to work with Akin
Equine Veterinary Services following her graduation. While attending
veterinary school, she did extensive research on sarcoids and equine
protozoal myelitis (EPM). She was president of the American Association
of Equine Practitioners student chapter. Dr. Phelps has stayed an
active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
Dr. Phelps is originally from Germantown, TN, where she was active
in the horse community.
